The picture below has some items I used in making the prototype of the ruby sting hooks that Sue Coby of  Ohio State University sells. The coin is a dime. On the right is a standard instrumental insemination sting hook. The hole in the tip is .20 mm. The little red items are rubies. Their size is 1.2 mm with a .19 mm hole. Those rubies are .90 mm with a hole of .17 mm.

The smallest hole I have ever drilled is 11/10,000 of an inch of which I can pass a wire of 5/1,000 through.
